Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

—Ephesians 4:32

That’s simple sounding, but I have a difficult time with it in a very specific, insidious way.

I’m way too critical, but I’m even more wretchedly critical of myself. I have a terrible time moving on from my mistakes, and they even keep me up at night; failing that, the nightmares about them wake me up. I don’t forgive MYSELF! No wonder I have problems.  I was stunned by this quote:

I think that if God forgives us, we must forgive ourselves. Otherwise, it is almost like setting up ourselves as a higher tribunal than Him.

—C.S. Lewis
