Divorce can be the hardest thing on a Christian. I’ve seen people who have tried so hard, and yet the marriage didn’t work out. You can’t force someone to freely love you, nor to honor their commitments. And from what I’ve seen, divorce can make Christians feel like they’re second-class—you know, they have “that thing” in their past. One gal mentioned to me, “It’s just so hard, because God hasn’t been divorced.”
It might help you to know that God knows exactly how you feel. In fact, our God, who knows and can feel all of our pains and struggles on a very personal level, is Himself tragically divorced. He laments,
“And I saw, when, for this very cause that backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a bill of divorcement also…” (Jer 3:8; see also Isaiah 50)
If you’ve been divorced, it doesn’t make you a second-class Christian. Our God understands with great anguish what you’ve been through.
With love,
Luke
