General Advice on Picking a Quality Mate
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Pretty sure that Luke told me this! (The other Luke.)
- Watch and see if they’re greedy or not, and if they help those in need. “He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, But he who hates bribes will live…Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor Will also cry himself and not be heard.” (Pro: 15:27;21:13)
- Check out their true friends. “He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.” (Pro 13:20)
- See if they listen to advice and learn, and are calm in doing so. “He who has knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit. Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive….The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise.” (Pro 17:27-28; 12:15) [Note: this is a struggle for me.]
- Observe whether or not they’re hot-headed, and if they plan ahead. “He who is slow to wrath has great understanding, But he who is impulsive exalts folly.” (Pro 14:29)
- Look at how they treat animals. “A righteous man regards the life of his animal, But the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.” (Pro 12:10)
Avoid people who:
- Like drugs and alcohol excessively, lacking self-control and wisdom. “Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long at the wine, Those who go in search of mixed wine.” (Pro 23:29-30)
- Are angry all the time. “Make no friendship with an angry man, And with a furious man do not go, Lest you learn his ways And set a snare for your soul.” (Pro 22:24-25)
