Soulless Eyes
BQ: We’ve all heard of murderers who are described as having soulless eyes. It’s a creepy thing to imagine. In the worldview of atheism though, everyone has soulless eyes, because no one has a soul. The late, famous Stephen Hawking remarked,
“It is hard to see how free will can operate if our behavior is determined by physical law, so it seems we are no more than biological machines and that free will is just an illusion.”
On atheism, you’re just an advanced biological machine; a soulless automaton. In the end, nothing matters, and so neither do you. I think that this is perhaps what makes Christianity so appealing, though these days it’s largely reviled. To me, there is little more beautiful than the words of the Psalmist:
“For you created my inmost being;
-Psalms 139:13-16
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.”
