Calvin the Moth as He Relates to Will Provine

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Yue Little grew a caterpillar into a pure, white moth, which she named Calvin. When I witness such things, imagining that somehow, through a blind process chock-full of errors, an organism arose which changes from a many-legged caterpillar into a two-winged creature of flight, is so preposterous as to be something out of a fairy tale.

The same is true when I consider the belief that nothing—no vacuum, no time, nothing—exploded and everything came into existence, and somehow atoms developed consciousness—and to top it off, the consciousness itself is just an illusion. It’s so far out there that to me it requires an absolute dedication to looking away from truth. Yet it’s a popular view, and well summed up by Will Provine, the American historian of science, of evolutionary biology, and population genetics:

“Let me summarize my views on what modern evolutionary biology tells us loud and clear — and these are basically Darwin’s views. There are no gods, no purposes, and no goal-directed forces of any kind. There is no life after death. When I die, I am absolutely certain that I am going to be dead. That’s the end of me.

There is no ultimate foundation for ethics, no ultimate meaning in life, and no free will for humans, either.”

-Will Provine

As staggering as that is, ultimately when I watch my daughter holding a moth which has just gone through metamorphosis, I can only find such people without excuse in their beliefs. Beyond being simply wrong, they’re committed to a fantasy where even being opposed to child-rape has no ultimate foundation.

“For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse.”

—Romans 1:20
